Director-General deplores death of Abdul Rahman Ismael in Syria
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the
killing of Syrian journalist Abdul Rahman Ismael Yassin in Eastern Ghouta
(Syria) on 20 February.
“I deplore the death of Abdul Rahman Ismael Yassin,” the
Director-General said. “I call on all parties to mobilize in order to guarantee
the safety of reporters and enable them to carry out their mission without
fearing for their lives.”
Abdul Rahman Ismael Yassin was a reporter for the Hammouriyeh Media
Centre. He was seriously injured by shrapnel during a bomb attack while
preparing a report on the effects of the airstrikes on the city of Hammouriyeh
and died from his wounds.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global
awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the
Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.

Defender.’
Investigation of the killing of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes
Brazilian authorities should be doing a fast, exhaustive
and independent investigation of the murder of human rights defender, Marielle
Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes.
Both were gunned down last Wednesay, March 14th, after a car
stopped next to theirs. But Franco and Gomes weren’t alone inside the car, a
press officer was with them, but fortunately he was not killed, he was just
injured.

Deputy Flor Estela Renteria Medina asked the National
Council to Prevent Discrimination, to activate the protocols in order to pay
attention and to protect the LGBT+ community in Torreon,
Coahuila, because of some alleged discriminatory actions the mayor Jorge
Zermeño practiced.
“It is important that the city council of Torreon knows that everyone in
Mexico is equal before the law. The Constitution guarantees that no person, by
his skin color, social position, religion, race, gender or sexual orientation
must be discriminated”, she exposed.
In a press conference, Renteria Medina, informed that with this goal, if
an LGBT+ member gets his right violated, Conapred will protect them of any
violation they receive.
The deputy of Coahuila informed that since two months ago, the new city
council has been doing a persecution and an authoritarian and violent attitude
to these people’s rights.
Medina said that the world has been evolving and has become more plural,
so that respect towards human rights must be the thing to rule the actions in
all situations and circumstances.
